Rods Saturday Morning Sports Post

The Pierre Lady Governor basketball team played even in the first quarter and won the 4th quarter but were outscored 27-12 in the middle two stanza’s in a 45-36 loss to third ranked Yankton Friday night at Riggs High Gym. The Lady Govs shot 41 percent on the game hitting 16 of 39 shots and were 4 of 12 from 3 point range. The Gazelles were 18 of 47 for 45 percent shooting and hit 6 of 18 three point shots in the game. Jenn Granflaten had a game high 15 points to pace Yankton while Sydney Palmer and Kristi Livermont each scored 8 points to lead the Lady Govs who host Brookings Tuesday night in the regular season finale and home finale at Riggs High Gym.

Lane Severyn scored 24 points including 13 in the second quarter as the Pierre Governor boys basketball team topped Yankton 58-48 Friday night in Yankton. Severyn had a game high 5 baskets from beyond the arc and dunk in the game that saw Pierre take a 5 point lead at halftime at 28-23 and would not relinquish it the rest of the night. Yankton got to within two points at 33-31 in the third quarter. The Govs led by as many as 13 in the 4th quarter. Matt Monfor added 10 points and Conner Berg and Joe Tetzlaff add dunks in the Governors offensive output. Pierre is now 14-5 on the season and wraps up the regular season with a game in Brookings on Thursday night. The Governors can secure a tie for the ESD regular season championship with a win and can win the title outright and gain the top seed in the upcoming District 3AA tournament with a win and a Mitchell loss at Aberdeen Central on Tuesday.

The Pierre Lady Governor gymnastics team scored 134.212 to finish 9th during the team day of the State Class AA Gymnastics meet in Brookings Friday night. Rapid City Central won the the state title with a 150.510 score, edging out defending state champion Watertown for the team title. The Arrows had 147.262. In the Class A team day, Stanley County scored 124.161 to finish 7th in the team standings. Deuel repeated as State Class A champions with a 145.846 score edging out runner up Madison which had 141.979. Chamberlain was third with a 129.395 score.

The Pierre-Ft. Pierre Lady Capitals hockey team blited Aberdeen 12-2 in a South Dakota high school league game last night in Aberdeen. Liz Knutson had 4 goals in the game for the Lady Capitals while Traci Corcoran and Allyssia Holzer each had two goals apeice. The Lady Capitals had a total of 6 girls score. Tessa Singleton stopped 11 of the 13 shots she faced on the night. Pierre-Ft. Pierre wraps up the regular season with an afternoon game against Brookings at the EXPO Center in Ft. Pierre this afternoon.
