The Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball doubleheader with Rapid City Post 22 was rained out yesterday in Pierre. The games have not been rescheduled.. Pierre, with their 2-2 record on the season, is scheduled to travel to Sturgis for a doublehader tomorrow night before heading to the Lewis and Clark Tournament hosted by Yankton. Pierre will play their round robin portion of the tournament in Hartington, Nebraska on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The scheduled doubleheader tomorrow between Pierre's two 15-16 teams, the Green Teeners and the White Teeners, has been postponed indefinitely because of the flooding situation in Pierre. Missouri River flows are scheduled to increase substantially starting on Thursday, and Wednesday is the final opportunity for community preparation against flooding. A new date will be announced later. At this time the preliminary plan calls for the Green-White game during the Stephens tournament to serve as the substitute. Changes in practice schedules will be announced to players by each team's coaches at the 15-16 and 13-14 levels while flood preparations continue this week.

The 4th-7th grade volleyball clinic, scheduled for June 1-3 from 9:00-11:00 at the Georgia Morse Middle School new gym has been moved to Jefferson Elementary gym due to the Red Cross use of GMMS.  The cost is $30 and players can register at the door.  For more information, contact Laura Weber via email at Laura.Weber@k12.sd.us or call 945-2735.

There will be an end of the season track and field awards banquet/ ice cream social on Thursday, June 2nd at 6:00 pm at the Riggs cafeteria.  Sophomores / seniors --> bring 1/2 gallon of vanilla ice cream and Freshmen / juniors --> bring your favorite ice cream topping.  All athletes who participated in high school track and field during the 2011 season are encouraged to attend.  Families of track and field athletes are also welcome.

Rain again washed out yesterday's drag races at Oahe Speedway north of Pierre. The Coca Cola Points Series races from Sunday and Monday were both rained out and track officials have not determined how they will be made up. All 3 of the points series races this season have been rained out. The next scheduled races at the Speedway are in two weekends on June 11th and 12th.

Pierre American Legion Baseball head coach Bob Sullivan contacted me this morning. The games for Monday against Rapid City Post 22 are still on as scheduled with a doubleheader set to begin at 2 pm at Hyde Stadium. He says that because of the flooding and everything going on Pierre he knows it will be tough for some to come to the ball game. But for those that do come to the game, they can come and watch the games for free. No admission on Monday. So if you want to get away for a couple of hours and watch some Legion baseball, your invited to do that on Monday at Hyde Stadium. Again, No Admission will be charged on Monday for the Pierre and Rapid City Post 22 American Legion baseball doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 pm.

The Pierre Governor senior sprinter and hurdler Parker McKittrick is a two time state champion and placed in 4 events today at the State High School Track and Field meet in Sioux Falls. McKittrick won the 110 meter high hurdles in a time of 14:28 and won the 300 meter hurdles in a time of ;38.24 setting a new state high school Class AA meet record in the process. McKittrick, who will be headed to North Dakota State to compete in track and field next year had a 6th place finish in the 100 meter dash and he finished 3rd in the 200 meter dash. That is 29 points that McKittrick picked up for the Governors just by himself today. Stephan Nielsen finished 6th in the 800 meter run at the state meet and the Governors placed 6th in the 4x800 meter relay. The Governors finished with 40 points and a 8th place finish at the state meet. The Lady Governors meanwhile had a tough two days at the state meet and finish 16th.. Gena Burley finished in a 3 way tie for 8th place in the high jump to be the Lady Govs only place winner in the two day meet.

Rod's Friday Sports Blog

The Pierre Rattlers amateur baseball team was to have opened the season tomorrow against Four Corners. Four Corners field was not ready so the doubleheader was moved to Pierre. Was is the key word. Rattlers General Manager Tom Magedanz says that with the emergency in Pierre and Ft. Pierre with the impending flooding, the doubleheader has been postponed at least. And no make up date has been determined or even talked about between the two teams. The two were are scheduled for 4 games during the season so we will have to wait and see.

With the flooding that is coming it is hard to think about sports in Pierre-Ft. Pierre. There is a pretty good chance that flood waters might reach the softball fields at the Oahe Complex and the little league field there. If that happens, the entire season may have to be cancelled. And two golf course in Pierre and Ft. Pierre, Hillsview and The Dunes are right along the river and in danger of being flooded and shut down. Hopefully the Levee's that are going to be built will help and do what they are supposed to do.

The Pierre Governor boys basketball camp is scheduled to be run next week and it will be but at a different location. Instead of being held at Riggs High Gym, the camp has been moved to the Oahe Family YMCA. Everything else about the camp remains the same with the elementary camp running to 9 am to 11:30 am. The Middle School camp going from 1 to 3:30 pm and the high school camp running from 5 to 8 pm all 4 days. But the camp has been moved to the Oahe YMCA and will not be held at Riggs High Gym.

I have not visited with Legion Baseball head coach Bob Sullivan about Monday's doubleheader with Rapid City Post 22 at Hyde Stadium but as of right now, it is still on as scheduled for a 2 pm start time. But thanks to the flooding and the Army Corp of Engineer's and some of their thought process and decisions, sports this summer in Pierre-Ft. Pierre isn't painting a very pretty picture at the present time anyway.

And on a another note, from the Associated Press Wire this morning......

The Mitchell boys basketball program has been put on probation for a year. Mitchell
Activities Director Geoff Gross says that the penalty stems from a rule violation by longtime head coach Gary Munsen, who coached at least one Mitchell player out of season at a tournament camp in mid-April. The state High School Activities Association handed down the discipline at its meeting last month in Pierre. It carries a $200 fine and a letter of reprimand. Coaches will not be able to organize four team activities this summer, and the district must detail steps to ensure similar violations don't happen in the future. The Mitchell boys team finished second at the Class AA state tournament in March.

Rod's Monday Sports in Things

Pierre finished 5th in the State ESD Tennis tournament that wrapped up on Saturday in Sioux Falls. Pierre finished ahead of all the other 7 ESD teams in the final standings, edging out ESD champion Watertown. It was the second best finish since Governor head coach Jeff Schlekeway took over the program behind last year's 4th place. Nathan Ellenbecker had a 4th place finish at number 3 singles for the top finish of the tournament for any of the 6 singles players and he and teammate Jerrod Smith finished 4th at number 2 doubles. Number 1 player Conner Forney, one of two seniors on the team finished 5th as he recorded 73 victories in his career for the Governors, placing him in 4th place ahead of Steven Cordts who recorded 68 victories from 1982 to 85. Chris Williams is the all time leader with 111 wins from 1999 to 2005. Tj Kracht has 86 wins to be second on the all time list Mike Trautner with 83 wins is third.

The Pierre Governor and Lady Governor Track and Field teams are gearing up for the State Track and Field meet this weekend in Brandon and Sioux Falls. 22 girls have qualified while 18 Governor boys have qualified. The 22 girls qualifying for the state meet is the most that has gone in several years for the Lady Govs. We will have live reports from the State Track and Field meet Friday and Saturday on 1060 AM KGFX.

And it has been almost a week since Harmon Killebrew passed and still he is being honored as one of the great players all time in major league baseball history. His 573 homes runs ranks him 11th on the all time list. While growing up in southeast Nebraska back in the 60's, Harmon Killebrew was one of my favorite players. Even though I am a Cubs fan, the only time I could see them was on Sundays on the one of the Omaha TV stations. But I listened to the Twins on the radio and Killebrew was always as big as life. Players like pitchers Jim Kaat and Jim "Mudcat" Grant and players like Killebrew and Bob Allison and Rich Reece and Tony Oliva just to name a few were household names. At least in our household they were. He was truly one of the last breed of players spending his entire major league career with the Twins and Washington Senators before they moved to Minneapolis. And a player that always treated the fans with respect and always was there to autograph, always smiling and never turning anyone away. While I did not see Killebrew play in a Twins uniform, I did see him as a Kansas City Royal and I was in attendance in 1975 when I was going to school in Minneapolis. It was Harmon Killebrew day on that Sunday. His first at bat, hit a towering home run into the upper deck of left field. The stadium gave him a standing ovation. It is something I will never forget.

Rod's Sunday Morning Sports This N That

The word is that the Pierre Governors 4th place finish yesterday in the ESD Conference Track and Field Meet was good enough to push Pierre to win the ESD Conference All Sports title for the 2010-11 sports season. The Governors finished one point ahead of the second place finisher. Pierre had a co-championship this year in football. A conference title in boys golf. A 2nd place finish in Cross Country. Tied for second in basketball and was third in boys tennis and 3rd in boys track and field. That is consistent success. Congratulations to all of the coaches and the athletes of Pierre Governor boys sports this school season.

And one of Pierre's Division 1 track and field athletes helped North Dakota State to another Summit League men's track and field championship. Matt Tetzlaff won the 110 meter hurdles and he finished second in the 300 meter hurdles. Another Governor athlete at NDSU, Alec Espland, had a 4th place finish in the 1500 meters for the Bison.

The Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team allowed 6 runs in the top of the 7th inning as Aberdeen defeated Pierre 14-7 in the season opener for both teams last night in Pierre. The second game was tied in the 5th when the game was called due to weather conditions. That game will be picked up at 11 am followed by Pierre against Aberdeen at noon. Aberdeen against Rapid City Post 320 at 2 pm and then Pierre against Post 320 at 4. All games are at Hyde Stadium.

Rod's Friday Sports Thoughts

The ESD Conference Track and Field meet will be run tomorrow and hosted by Watertown. The Pierre Governor and Lady Governor squads will compete in the meet. Head coach Misty Larson says Watertown should win both the boys and girls team titles. She says Pierre does not have the depth it has had in the past, especially in the girls division. The boys lack of sprinters will probably keep the Governors from a shot at winning the title. Field events are scheduled to begin at 11:30 am with the running events on the track expected to begin at 12 noon. And we will be having reports throughout the afternoon on KGFX tomorrow as well.

The Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team will open it's season with a pair of doubleheaders tomorrow and Sunday at Hyde Stadium. Pierre will host Aberdeen and Rapid City Post 320 in a pair of triangulars. Post 8, with 21 players on it's Legion varsity roster and nearly everybody back from last year's squad, will play Aberdeen in the days first game at 2 pm tomorrow. After Aberdeen and Post 320 play at 4pm, Post 8 will take on Region 3 opponent Post 320 at approximatly 6 pm. On Sunday, Pierre will play Aberdeen once again at 10 am. Pierre will take on Post 320 at 2 pm after Rapid City and Aberdeen play at noon. Bob Sullivan will begin his third season as head coach of the Post 8 program.

Monday's scheduled Region 3A girls golf tournament scheduled for Hillsview Golf Course in Pierre has been postponed already. The Region tournament has been moved back one day and will now be played on Tuesday with the tournament scheduled to tee off at 8 am. Stanley County and Chamberlain are among the teams scheduled to play in that tournament that will decide spots and teams in the State Class A tournament the following week.

And.....The first weekend of racing at Oahe Speedway is scheduled to be held tomorrow and Sunday after two rainouts the first two weekends. Spectator gates open at 12 noon both days with races begining at 1 pm and elimination rounds at 5 pm both days. Shootout races are scheduled tomorrow with the Coca Cola Points Series 2nd scheduled races to be held on Sunday. The first series was rained out two weekends ago and rescheduled for July 31st. Oahe Speedway is located 14 miles north of Pierre along highway 1804.

Rod's Thursday Sports N Things

Another camp is coming up for youngsters in Pierre-Ft. Pierre and central South Dakota. The Pierre Post 8 American Legion's Little League baseball camp will be held on Thursday and Friday May 26th and 27th at the Oahe Softball Complex. The camp is being run by Pierre Post 8 head coach Bob Sullivan and the Legion baseball team. The camp will run from 1 to 5 pm both days and is for both boys and girls ages 9 to 13. There is a $40 fee per camp participant which includes a T-Shirt and snacks. Players will need to bring their own bats, gloves, caps, baseball shoes and pants along with catchers gear. Applications for the camp are available on the Post 8 baseball website www.post8baseball.com. Pre registration is preferred with that deadline set for May 19th. Players must have signed permission from a parent or legal guardian to participate in the camp.

As I mentioned earlier this week, Post 8 is ready to open it's season this weekend hosting Aberdeen and Rapid City Post 320. Aberdeen only has 12 players on it's Legion Varsity squad and a new head coach as Mark Gulseth stepped down. Post 320 won't be the same team that they will be later this season towards regional tournament time. They have players that are currently playing high school baseball in Rapid City. Post 8 has 21 players listed on it's Legion Varsity roster as they have almost everybody back from last year's squad. They only lost 2 players in Ryan Lauseng and Kris Hewlett. Pierre and Aberdeen will play at 2 pm on Saturday followed at around 4 pm by Aberdeen and Rapid City Post 320. Then Post 320 and Pierre will play at about 6 pm. On Sunday the schedule is the same except that the first game with Pierre and Aberdeen is scheduled for 10 am with the other two games at noon and 2 pm.

And after this weekend, Tuesday night of next week will be Post 8 Night where fans can come to Hyde Stadium and watch all of the Post 8 teams play capped off by an exhibition game between the Post 8 Legion squad and the Pierre Rattlers amateur team.

Rod's Tuesday Sports Thoughts

On Friday I posted girls basketball camp information for the Pierre Lady Governors this summer. I unfortunatly missed the elementary camp for girls who will be heading into grades 2 through 5 next year. The camp fee is $40 of which girls will recieve a pair of shorts. The camp dates are June 20th thru the 23rd and time of the camp is from 10:30 am to noon all 3 days. For information on the other camps for Junior High and High School refer back to Friday's blog. Also there will be a girls basketball summer league at Riggs High Gym on Thursday night's this summer from 6 to 10 pm consisting of teams from area high schools. Stanley County, Sully Buttes, Gettysburg, Miller, Highmore-Harrold and Philip will be joining Pierre.

Next. The Pierre Governor Tennis team will play in the ESD Conference Tennis Tournament on Friday in Aberdeen and this year, Pierre is probably the favorite to win the title. Pierre has not won an ESD title in 20 years. 1991 was the last ESD Conference champion. Coach Jeff Schlekeway says that along with Pierre.........
Watertown, Aberdeen Central and Mitchell should challenge for the title. The seeding meeting is Friday morning at 7:45 am with the tournament beginning at 9 am. And with the way the weather has been this spring, the seeding meeting may be as interesting of an event as the tournament itself. Pierre should have high seeds in at least the number 1 through 4 singles spots and possibly at number 6. The doubles teams at the 1 and 2 flights should seed out high on Friday as well. The most points in a tournament are gained at the top at number 1 and 2 singles and 1 and 2 doubles and Pierre has been strong in both positions so far this year. So perhaps this will be the year that Pierre breaks through. Pierre finished 2nd in 2000 and 2001 but that is the highest they have been able to get in the ESD tournament as Watertown has pretty much dominated the conference over the course of the last 10 years. Last year, the Governors were a 4th place finisher, the highest finish since Jeff Schlekeway took over the reigns of head coach in 2005. So the best of luck to the Governor tennis squad on Friday.

And speaking of tennis, a Lil' Lady Govs Tennis Camp is being held for Girls in grades 1-8 on Monday, May 23 from 6-8 pm and Tuesday, May 24 from 3:30-5:30. Join the Girls Varsity Tennis team for 2 nights of fun while learning about the basics of tennis plus get a FREE t-shirt! Racquets will be provided but if you have one please bring it. Call Megan Vockrodt at 295-1503 or 224-6776 with questions or to register by May 18th.

Rod's Monday Sports

Dont' forget about the meetings and fund raising events on the schedule today and tomorrow for several of our athletic squads in Pierre. This Saturday and Sunday the Post 8 Legion baseball team begins play for the upcoming season hosting Aberdeen and Rapid City Post 320 at Hyde Stadium in a pair of triangulars both days. Pierre plays Aberdeen on Saturday at 2 pm. Aberdeen and Rapid City Post 320 will play at 4 pm and then Pierre and Post 320 will meet up at 6 pm. Sunday's schedule is the same as Saturday except that games begin at 10 am, noon and 2 pm. As I mentioned a couple of week's ago, we have decided not to broadcast Legion baseball games this year. It was a decision that did not come easy but came from the top. The economy is not as good as it could be as you probably know and we must sell a certain amount of advertising to make games on the radio work. That has been getting harder and harder over the course of the last couple of years. Last year, we wound up with more expenses during the Legion baseball season than we did profit. So the boss told me that we were not going to broadcast this year. Hopefully we can try again next year and see what happens. As I looked back, it will be the first time in some 25 years that the Dakota Radio Group has not broadcast Legion baseball games and the first time since I began here in 1992. It's unfortunate but our rule is that we have to make some money to do things. Other stations have their own rules. So go out, support the Legion and Teeners and baseball in Pierre because the kids deserve it.
