The Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Watertown last night at Hyde Stadium. Pierre lost the opener 14-4 and then dropped the nightcap 5-2 to even their season record at 20-20 on the season. Nolan Merrill had a 2 run home run for Pierre in the nightcap as he lead the Post 8 squad at the plate with 3 hits. Scott Cichos, despite pitching well in the nightcap, took the loss. Adam Deneke started and took the loss in game 1 as he battled control walking 9 Watertown batters. Jared Nielan had 3 hits and a RBI to lead Pierre offensivly at the plate. Pierre takes a coule of days off before hosting Brandon Valley and Mandan, North Dakota in a triangular Friday at Hyde Stadium. On Saturday and Sunday, Winner will join the 3 teams for the Doug Koester Memorial Tournament.
Several members of last year's Pierre Governor and Lady Governor track and field teams were honored as Academic All State performers from the South Dakota Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association. Drake Hagen, Taylor Larson, Alex McLain, Stephen Nielson, Aaron Propst and Courtney Ziebart were all seniors for the Governors and Lady Governors this past year and had participated in the sport for at least three years, had an overall GPA of 3.5 or better and were nominated by their head coach Misty Larson.

The Pierre 15-16 Green Teener Baseball team's scheduled doubleheader at Aberdeen scheduled for tonight has been cancelled due to unplayable field conditions at Fossom Field in Aberdeen. Aberdeen recieved over 4 inches of rain a short time last night. No make up date has been made.
Next week will be a busy camp week for Pierre Governor and Lady Governor athletes. The Lady Govs Volleyball camp will be held Monday through Wednesday at Riggs High Gym. The elementary camp for girls who will be entering the third through 6th grades this coming school year will be held in the mornings from 9 am to 11:30 am with registration a 1/2 hour prior to the beginning of camp on Monday. Girls entering the 7th through 12th grades this coming school year will have their camp in the afternoon from 1 to 4 pm during the 3 days. There is no cost to take part in the camp for Pierre athletes. Out of town athletes will assesed a $25 fee. There will be a $10 fee for camp partipants for T-Shirts. If you have any questions or would like to register for the camp, contact Lady Gov head coach Kacy Kienholz at 222-1210.

The guest camp clinician will be Philip High School head coach Matt Donnelly. Donnelly is a 5 time coach of the year award winner in the sport of wrestling at Phlip and his teams have a 117-17 dual record during his tenure. Next week's camp will be split up into 3 different sessions for the two days. The camp for wrestlers who will be entering the 9th through 12th grades this school year will be held from 9 am to 11 am both days while the camp for elementary and middle school wrestlers next year will be split up with Group 1 from noon to 1 pm and Groups 2 and 3 going from 1 to 3 pm both days. There is no cost for Pierre wrestlers to compete in the camps. After taking 3 days off for the 4th of July holiday, the Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team begins it's second to last week of the regular season tonight when they host Watertown at Hyde Stadium. Tonight's doubleheader will be the only time the two teams play during the course of the regular season. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5:00 pm. Note that the starting time is a half hour earlier than normal.

Here are the race winners from the weekend at Oahe Speedway North of Pierre. Saturday's winners included Box Shootout winner Curt Humann of Pierre. Randy Hirsch of Pierre won the No Box Shootout. Travis Olson of Bath, S.D. took the Trophy Shootout and Kimberlee Guether of Ft. Pierre won the Junior Shootout. Yesterday's Coca Cola Points Series race winners included Rick Meier of Rapid City winning the Super Pro Series points race. Larry Iverson of Pierre was the Pro Series winner. Charles Snyder of Selfridge, N.D. took the Bike Points race while Travis Falcon of Pierre won the Sportsman Class, Ron Winterberg of Timber Lake, S.D. took the Street Trophy Points race, James Morris of Pierre took the High School Divisoin race while Alyssa Oberlander of Box Elder, S.D. won the Junior Major points class. The Junior Minor points class winner was Jonathan Huse of Onida. Dan Mohr of Mitchell won the Gamblers point race while Jake Miller of Ft. Pierre won the Junior Gamblers Points race. The next scheduled weekend of racing at Oahe Speedway is in two weekends. Have a fun and safe 4th of July.

The Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team split a doubleheader with Brookings yesterday at Hyde Stadium winning the first game 7-6 in walkoff fasion in the bottom of t he 7th and then losing the nightcap 2-0 in 9 innings. Busch dueled through 8 innings with neither giving up a run and both giving up 6 hits. Hunter Mouw pitched in the 9th for Brookings allowing 1 hit in picking up the win. In the opener, Pierre trailed 6-5 going into the bottom of the 7th before scoring two runs to secure Post 8's 20th win of the season against 18 setbacks. Taylor Owens picked up the win in relief of starter Mac Mercer for Pierre who host Watertown Tuesday night at Hyde Stadium.
Pierre will play Spearfish in their first game of the Region 3A tournament July 20th through the 22nd at Rapid City and hosted by Rapid City Post 22. Sturgis and Rapid City Post 320 open the tournament at 11 am on the 20th with the winner to face Post 22 that night at 8 pm. Pierre and Spearfish play at 2 pm. The winner advances to play the winner of the Rapid City Post 22 contest on the 21st. The loser will play the loser of the Sturgis and Post 320 game in an elimination game at 5 pm on the 20th. The top two teams advance to the State Legion tournament in Yankton that begins on July 27th.

Rain has forced the cancellation of the Chamberlain at Pierre Rattlers amatuer baseball game for tonight in Pierre. The game will not be rescheduled and the Rattlers are now off for a week. They are scheduled to go to Huron on Thursday and then to Chamberlain and Winner for games a week from Sunday.
The Pierre Post 8 American Legion team knows who will be their first round opponent in the Regional Tournament later this month. Spearfish, the same team that Pierre beat twice last night will be the first opponent Pierre will play in the Region 3A tournament that will be hosted by Rapid Cit Post 22. The tournament begins on July 20th. Pierre also travels to Spearfish to play their second to last scheduled doubleheader on July 12th.

Kaitlyn Severyn, who will be a sophomore next season for the Pierre Lady Governor basketball team gave a verbal commitment Thursday to play her collegiate basketball at South Dakota State. The 5'10" Severyn - whose dad, Shane, played football for the Jackrabbits - has played two years of varsity basketball, earning all-ESD honors last year as a freshman.
One day after surrendering 21 runs in a doubleheader loss to Mitchell and Yankton, the Pierre Post 8 American Legion Baseball team got stellar pitching in a doubleheader sweep of Spearfish at Hyde Stadium. Pierre won the doubledip by 11-0 and 6-2 scores. In the opener which ended after 5 innings on the 10 run mercy rule, Nolan Merrill fired a 4 hit shutout and get plenty of run support as they crossed the plate in each of the 4 innings they hit. Adam Deneke led the offense with 3 hits and 4 RBI's in the opener. In the nightcap, Jordan Smith went the distance scattering 4 hits and 2 runs, both in the 7th inning after Pierre had built a 6-0 lead. Merrill had 2 hits and walked twice to lead Pierre offensivly. With the wins, Pierre pulled themselve above the .500 mark once again as they are 19-17 on the season.

After playing 11 games in 7 days, the Post 8 squad does not have a game scheduled for today or tonight. But the day off will be short lived as Post 8 returns to the field tomorrow. Pierre will entertain Brookings in a doubleheader at Hyde Stadium. Brookings beat Pierre in their only other meeting of the season last month in the championship game of the Yankton tournament. First pitch for game 1 is scheduled for 2 pm. Tomorrow's doubleheader will be sponsored by the American State Bank of Pierre. Several drawings will be held throughout the games for prizes from American State Bank.
