The Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Watertown last night at Hyde Stadium. Pierre lost the opener 14-4 and then dropped the nightcap 5-2 to even their season record at 20-20 on the season. Nolan Merrill had a 2 run home run for Pierre in the nightcap as he lead the Post 8 squad at the plate with 3 hits. Scott Cichos, despite pitching well in the nightcap, took the loss. Adam Deneke started and took the loss in game 1 as he battled control walking 9 Watertown batters. Jared Nielan had 3 hits and a RBI to lead Pierre offensivly at the plate. Pierre takes a coule of days off before hosting Brandon Valley and Mandan, North Dakota in a triangular Friday at Hyde Stadium. On Saturday and Sunday, Winner will join the 3 teams for the Doug Koester Memorial Tournament.
Several members of last year's Pierre Governor and Lady Governor track and field teams were honored as Academic All State performers from the South Dakota Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association. Drake Hagen, Taylor Larson, Alex McLain, Stephen Nielson, Aaron Propst and Courtney Ziebart were all seniors for the Governors and Lady Governors this past year and had participated in the sport for at least three years, had an overall GPA of 3.5 or better and were nominated by their head coach Misty Larson.
