Once Monday roles around, the fall sports season in South Dakota will be in high gear. Monday is the first allowable practice day for football, volleyball and cross country. Pierre head football coach Joe Kramer reminds players that equipment checkout will be held Sunday evening at 7 pm at the equipment shed below the upper pracitice field at Riggs. With Monday being a teacher in service day, football practice will begin at 4 pm and last until 8 pm. On Tuesday, practices will be in the morning from 7 to 11 am. On Wednesday it will be a 4 to 8 pm practice and then Thursday and Friday the team returns to a 7 am to 11 am practice time. Then on Saturday morning at 10 am on August 20th will be the annual Gatorade scrimmage at Phil Trautner Stadium at Hollister Field. The Governors kick off the season on the road on Saturday August 27th when they travel to Yankton.
The Lady Governor volleyball team will begin the season Monday morning at the track. Head Coach Kacy Kienholz says the girls will need to run the mile in 8 minutes or less at 7 am. Then they head to practice court Monday afternoon at 3:30 pm for their first practice and will go until 6 pm. The rest of the week has the practice schedule with two a days from 7:30 to 10 am and again from 3:30 to 6 pm thru the rest of the first week. Coach Kienholz is expecting between 40 and 50 girls to report on Monday. Coach Kienholz says that basic fundamentals will be priortized for the first couple weeks of practice. The Lady Govs will open the season on Friday, August 26th when they host Yankton and then travel to Douglas the next day so they will have two matches under their belt within 24 hours of each other.
