Fans will get a sneak peak of this year's edition of the Pierre Governor football team tomorrow morning during the annual gatorade scrimmage at the football field at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium. Governor head football coach Joe Kramer says that the scrimmage will be scripted out and be a controlled scrimmage. He tells Dakota Radio Group Sports after yesterday 4th two a day practices of the week that the team was tired and the coaching staff would ease up a bit on the squad today for the final two a days. He says that the final numbers look like 12 seniors, 11 juniors, 30 sophomores and 40 freshman will make up the Governor varsity and sub varsity teams this year. The numbers are down a bit at the senior and junior level from last year but about the same in the other two grades.
Pierre Governor golfer Zach Smalley fired a first round 77 to lead the Governors after the first day of the West River Invitational boys golf tournament golfed at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club. The Governors fired a 331 team score and sit in 5th place, 9 strokes behind first round leader Rapid City Stevens. Other Governor scores yesterday included Mark Costello with a 81. Willie Welch carded a 82 while Hans Leong had a 91, Drew Leif fired a 98 and Joey Beck came in with an even 100. Sam Musch and Taylor Boos of Rapid City Stevens along with Tyler Burr of Belle Fourche all fired first round 73's to tie for the lead. Today's second and final round of the West River Invitational will be played at the Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City.
The Pierre Lady Governor tennis team opens their season on the road tomorrow when they travel to Sioux Falls to face the 3 Sioux Falls public schools in dual matches. The Lady Governors will face Sioux Falls Washington, Sioux Falls Lincoln and Sioux Falls Roosevelt. Pierre has only two returning players that played varsity tennis last year and they do not have a senior on the squad. It will also be an opportunity for Pierre doubles teams to play together, in most cases, for the first time.
The Pierre Governor and Lady Governor soccer seasons begin this weekend. The Govs and Lady Govs will open their season tonight taking on Rapid City Stevens at the Sioux Park soccer fields in Rapid City. Both the boys and girls varsity matches will be played simultaneously at 8 pm following the JV games that are scheduled to begin at 6. Pierre's boys have 6 seniors returning from last year's squad and after that, underclassmen who saw some action last year. The Lady Govs got to the championship of last year's state tournament before losing in the title game. Martyn Beeny begins his second year as head coach of the Governors while Sydney Zenin begins his 4th season at the helm of the Lady Govs program. Tomorrow, the Governors and Lady Governors will face Rapid City Central in Rapid City with the varsity matches both scheduled for 1 pm following the JV contests at 11 am.
