Brian's Wednesday Whining

Another college football bowl season, and another reason for BCS opponents like me to fire away. Okay, so it's Alabama against Texas for the National Championship. I don't have any problems with that - I think we've got the most legitimate match-up possible for the Championship game. But once again, we've got other teams who have a legitimate beef, as they get denied a chance at a title -- probably a once-in-a-lifetime chance.

So we've got the National Title game on tap, but then what else? Poor, poor Tim Tebow and Florida -- well, they get unbeaten Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl, and I think this will probably be a great game, although Florida might take their frustrations out on Cincy a little. But then you have the game that I hope everyone watches -- the Fiesta Bowl, which will have unbeaten Boise St. against unbeaten TCU. Boise beat TCU, 17-16, in last year's Poinsettia Bowl (which I'm not sure I've ever even heard of, since there are so many these days), and both teams are better this year, so this one should not disappoint. It's good that this game will be the only bowl game of the day when it is played on Jan. 4, because these two teams will be able to showcase what they have and why they probably should have as much of a shot as anyone to win the BCS Championship. Okay, so they're in a BCS Bowl Game, but have they really been given a chance to win the title?

Here's what frosts me about this. In the minds of the BCS Committee that selects which teams will play in each BCS Bowl Game, what in the world is this game going to prove? Who's the "best of the rest"? Is anyone in the country really interested in who the better of these two teams is? I don't know, maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't want to know who the better of these two teams is. What I want to know is, can TCU compete with a team like Florida? That's the match-up I would much rather see, and if the Horned Frogs would happen to knock off the mighty Gators, then to me that would go a long way in proving that the BCS computer rankings don't mean squat! Boise St. beat Oklahoma a few years back, but I guess that wasn't proof enough. Boise and Cincinnati would also make for a great game.

Long story short, the BCS is still a joke, but there are some great games to look forward to, like Iowa-Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl, Ohio St.-Oregon in the Rose Bowl, and as usual, that Holiday Bowl should be pretty good, too, with Nebraska against Arizona. But before I end this, I need to gripe about two other things. 1) Remember when the college football season ended on January 1, no ifs, ands, buts, or lucrative TV deals? And 2) it might have a regional flavor, with Minnesota and Iowa St. playing, but is the Insight Bowl really worth watching at all? Two teams both 6-6, both 3-5 within their own conferences. You know, six wins might make you "bowl-eligible," but if you have a chance to end your season with a losing record (one of these teams will be 6-7), do you really deserve to play in a bowl game at all? NO!!! For crying out loud, there are 33 bowl games that'll be played this year, and only about 5 or 6 that I probably won't have something better to do while they're being played. Give me something I can get excited for! Please give me a college football playoff system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Merry Christmas!

  1. I heard on the news that our elected officials were debating a college football playoff system in a congressional hearing today so maybe not only will we get a playoff system we might just get a new tax to pay for it. If they are gonna have 33 bowl games what would be the problem with a 32 or 16 team playoff? if there isnt any bowl games would they still have the parades? What would parade float builders do? What would washed up actors and actresses who are trying to sell their latest diet book do if they couldnt host these parades. In your quest to end the BCS have you given any thought to those people Mr. Oakland?

  2. I'm only here to whine and moan, not come up with solutions as to how washed up has-beens can improve their lives without having to sink to the levels of showing up in places where only a few people will see them, only to think, "Hey, I thought that guy was dead!"
