Rod's Thursday Sports Blog

The Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team was swept last night by Sturgis by scores of 4-3 and 9-8 in 8 innings to drop their early season record to 2-4. They begin play in the Lewis and Clark baseball tournament in Yankton, Vermillion and Hartington, Nebraska tomorrow. Pierre will open pool play today with a doubleheader against Sioux Falls West and Brandon Valley. Saturday, Pierre will play the host Hartington squad and then Crieghton, Nebraska. If Pierre advances out of the pool play portion of the tournament, they are scheduled to play either a 3rd place or championship game on Sunday in Yankton.

All three of Pierre’s VFW Teener teams are scheduled for home doubleheaders over the course of the next few days. The White 15-16 team hosts Huron Saturday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader. The Green 15-16 team hosts Sioux Falls West on Sunday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The first games of both twin bills count in the South Dakota VFW League standings. The 13-14 teams hosts Brookings on Monday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader. It will be the season openers for all 3 of the Teener teams.

Citizens wanting to know any changes in the Pierre Recreation Departments summer recreation programs can go to the city of Pierre web site at http://ci.pierre.sd.us or www.pierre.sd.gov and a link will take them to the information. The first session of summer recreation programs will begin on Monday.

With the great cooperation of the Northern State University and the Aberdeen Park and Rec department and the staff of USTA Northern, the Capital City Open Tennis Tournament will be held in Aberdeen at the Northern St. courts on Saturday June 25 and Sunday the 26th. As in the past there will be both junior and adult divisions. The proceeds from the tournament will help us with clean up efforts at the Pierre tennis facility once the water recedes. Because of logistics entries will only be taken online. Registrations will be taken at the following http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=101038
