Kacie Mikkelsen has been named as the new certified athletic trainer for the Pierre Governors and Lady Governor athletic teams for the coming school year. Mikkelsen is a Agar native and Gettysburg High School graduate in 2004. She attended South Dakota State and recieved her undergraduate degree in athletic training. She earned her Masters degree from SDSU this spring. She will be the first full time athletic trainer that Pierre Riggs High Sports has had.

Pierre Post 8's Teeners Green team fell 5-4 to Brandon in Green's final State VFW 15-16 League contest of the 2011 season Mondday evening. The game was played at the Valley Springs field. Green finished its regular season with a league record of 10 wins and five losses. But both the Green and the White Team will play this weekend in the State VFW 15-16 Teener AA State tournament in Brookings. The Green squad will matchup against Brandon Valley in their first game on Thursday at 10 am. The White Squad will take on Sioux Falls West at 1 pm in their first game of the tournament on Thursday. The White squad finished the regular season with a 3-12 league record.

Today is the start of the fall sports seasons in South Dakota. Competitive Cheer and Dance teams can begin practice for the first time today. Girls Tennis and Boys Golf first allowable practices are scheduled for Monday while Cross Country, football and volleyball can begin their first practices for the season on Monday, August 18.

Pierre Swim Team had a strong showing at the 2011 SD Long Course State Championship held in Sioux Falls July 29-31 with several state champions and a record setting relay team.  The 9-10 girls relay team:  Talia Jorgensen, Sydney Theobald, Marlee Dravland and Taryn Senger broke a 21 year hold record in two events.  They set a new record in the 200-meter Freestyle and the 200-meter Medley relays breaking the previous records set in 1990.

The Best in the West Horseshoe tournament was held in Pierre over the weekend at the horseshoe pits at Griffin Park. Pitchers came from Rapid City, Midland, Spearfish, Ridgeview, Harrold, Blunt and Pierre to pitch in the blistering heat. On Saturday, Macey Chambers of Blunt won the Class A division as she finished ahead of Billy Markwed of Midland and Roland Kleinschmidt of Harrold who finished 2nd and 3rd. In the Class B division, Bryce Chambers of Blunt won the title finished ahead of runner up Ron Purkapile of Pierre and third place finisher Gary Whitney of Pierre. Sunday's winners were Glenn Lee of Ridgeview in the Class A divison and Macey Chambers of Blunt in the Class B division. Lee finshed ahead of Kleinschmidt and 3rd place finisher Harlan Nielsen of Rapid City. Chambers won out over Purkapile and 3rd place finisher Whitney.

The Stanley County Booster Club will be having the first meeting of the new school year tomorrow evening at 6:00 pm in the high school learning center in Ft. Pierre.
