The Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team wrapped up the 2011 regular season on the losing end of a doubleheader to Aberdeen last night in Aberdeen. Pierre saw their 6 game winning streak snapped in game 1 losing a 1-0 contest. Then Aberdeen made it a sweep in the nightcap by defeating Pierre 8-2 leaving Pierre with a 26-22 record going into next week's Region 3A tournament in Rapid City. In game one last night, Michael Weigehop RBI single off of losing pitcher Royce Pease brought home the games lone run in the bottom of the 7th. Pease came in relief of Scott Cichos who threw the first 6 innings allowing just 4 hits. Pierre could muster only 3 hits off of two Aberdeen pitchers with John Breckinridge getting two of them. In the nightcap, Aberdeen scored 7 runs in the second inning off of losing pitcher Tyler Ness to put the game away. Ness went the distance allowing 14 hits and 8 earned runs. Pierre could get only 5 hits on the game with 5 different players. Adam Deneke had an RBI for Post 8.
The Pierre Post 8 Split Squad split a doubleheader last night at Hyde Stadium with the Rapid City Post 320 Shooting Stars. The Rapid City squad won the opener 8-7 but Pierre prevailed in the nightcap with a 4-3 win. Pierre had 6 errors in the opening game that saw Pierre scored 3 times in the bottom of the 7th only to fall short. Alex Gray's walk off RBI single in the 7th provided Pierre with the winning run as the Split Squad got 9 hits in the nightcap.
The Pierre Athletic Booster Club will be holding it's 6th annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, July 30th at the Oahe Trails Golf Course north of Pierre. The tournament will consist of 6 person teams with a $20 entry fee per person. Cart rental and green fees are extra. Registration begins at 10:30 am with the 9 hole tournament scheduled to tee off at 12 noon. Following the tournament the Booster Club will have a meal at the Outpost Events Center. For more information on the tournament or to pre-register, contact Randy Vance in Pierre. All monies raised will go to help assist Pierre Governor and Lady Governor athletes.
Onida native Tom Byrum fired a first round 67 at the Viking Classic on the PGA Golf Tour in Mississippi. He is 2 shots behind the leaders. 6 different golfers shot 65's yesterday. Byrum' daughter also served as his caddy yesterday at the tournament.
