Sioux Falls East banged out 21 hits and scored 10 runs in the second and third inning to cruise to a 14-4 win over Pierre Post 8 in a game called after 8 innings on the 10 run mercy rule the opening round of the State American Legion Baseball tournament in Yankton Wednesday. Pierre starter Scott Cichos was in trouble from the start loading the bases in the first inning but pitching out of it with no runs allowed. But the walls came crashing in on Cichos and Post 8 in the second and third innings. Cichos allowed 8 earned runs on 11 hits in 3 innings of work. Pierre had 6 hits including a 3 run home run from Adam Deneke and a solo shot from Jarred Nielan. With the loss, Pierre drops into the losers bracket of the tournament will play an elimination game Thursday morning at 10 am.



The Pierre White 15-16 Teener baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader yesterday to Sioux Falls West losing the opening league contest 21-6 and then was outscored 17-16 in the second game. Alex Meagher had 2 of Pierre’s 6 hits in the opener. He also allowed the first 10 runs of the game as he was the losing pitcher. In the nightcap, Sioux Falls pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning as Jon Albright took the loss in relief of starter Shay Reinke. 5 Pierre batters had 2 hits apiece as the Whites had 14 hits in the game.



The Pierre 15-16 Green Teener team swept a doubleheader from Aberdeen last night at Hyde Stadium. The Green squad won the opener 11-7 in the league contest between the two teams. In the nightcap, Pierre had an easier time of it by besting Aberdeen 20-7. In the opener, Willie Welch went 2 for 2 with a 2 RBI's and Alex Gray added 3 RBI's. Cody Honeywell struggled but won on the mound. In the nightcap, the Green's got a pair of doubles and 3 RBI's from Tyler Sarringer. Welch weas the winning pitcher in the 5 inning contest. The Green Teeners will play Brookings Friday in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. and then they close the regular season with a doubleheader agains the Pierre 15-16 White Teeners at 5:30 on Sunday. Both doubleheaders are in Pierre.



Pierre's Zach Smalley fired a second round 79 to finish with a 36 hole score of 160 at the South Dakota Golf Association's Austad's Junior Golf tour's State Championship tournament played at the Brandon Golf Course yesterday. Smalley finished 21 shots behind the winner in the boys 16-18 division tournament Chris Gaher of Sioux Falls. In the girls 16-18 division tournament that wrapped up yesterday, Hallie Getz of Pierre fired a 76, 9 strokes lower than her opening round score to record a 36 hole total 161 and finished in 7th place. Getz was 7 shots off the pace of the winner of the tournament, Haliee Piper of Watertown.



Another summer camp is being held in Pierre Thursday thru Saturday. A Pierre Governor Wrestling Camp is being held in the wrestling room at Riggs High Gym with the guest clinician, former North Dakota State wrestling standout Gabe Mooney. Mooney was a 4 time state champion in high school in Minnesota and this will be the fourth consecutive year that he had held a camp in Pierre over the summer. Pierre Governor head coach Ryan Noyes says the camp for those entering high school next year will be from 9 am to 11 am. The camp for group one wrestlers will be from Noon to 1 pm and for Group two wrestlers will run from 1 to 3 pm. The camp is free to all Pierre wrestlers and any one who wants to take part in the camp should just show up at the wrestling room. This week's camp is the third wrestling camp that has been held in Pierre this summer.
