The Pierre Rattlers amateur baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday at Rapid City against the Rapid City Angels. Pierre was outscored in the first game 10-8 then lost the nightcap 5-2 to fall to 4 and 9 on the season. In the first game, Allen Goodman allowed 6 runs on 7 hits in taking the loss. The Rattlers also had 7 hits in the game with Harry Decker getting 4 of them. In the nightcap, Decker went the first five innnings allowing all 5 runs on 10 hits in taking the loss on the mound. He struck out 3. Brian Graves and John Richter each had 2 hits apeice to pace Pierre. The Rattlers play their final home game of the season Wednesday night when they entertain Miller at Hyde Stadium.
The Pierre 13-14 Teener baseball team went 3 and 1 over the weekend in winning the championship of the Joe Kirley Memorial Baseball Tournament. The lone setback came yesterday when the Teeners were outscored by Huron 10-7 at Hyde Stadium. Pierre committed 6 errors in the loss. Pierre posted victories over Aberdeen, the Rapid City Post 22 Cadets and Watertown on Friday and Saturday in the tournament. The 13-14 Teeners travel to Brookings Wednesday for their next action.
The Pierre Green 15-16 Teener baseball team returns to the field tonight after taking the weekend off. The Greens host Huron in a doubleheader at Hyde Stadium with the first pitch of game 1 at 5:30 pm. The first game of the doubleheader will count towards the league standings with two weeks left to play in the regular season.
Cliff Bakx of Grunthal, Manitoba set a new track record yesterday at Oahe Speedway during the Midwest Wild Bunch racing. Bakx, who set a new record on Saturday going 209.59 mph, beat his record less than 24 hours later by posting a time of 214.33 mph mark. He also broke the Estimated Time record with a ET of 6.380. Bakx beat the old record of 203.2 mph set last year by Les Feist of Clearwater, Minnesota. In the Midwest Wild Bunch finals yesterday at the speedway, Bill Fuchs of Paynesville, Minnesota won the title defeating Wally Stelmach of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the finals.
Tim Sullivan of Sioux Falls and Chris Boom of Pierre were winners of the first annual Bike/Drag Sled Run for the Money held Saturday at Oahe Speedway north of Pierre. Sullivan won the Street Bike Division defeating Roger Valandra of Fort Yates, N.D. in the finals. Boom captured the Drag Bike/Sled title by defeating Don Gurnon of Huron in the finals.
Chad Uhrig of Pierre won the Super Pro Series Race of the 6th Coca Cola Points Series Races yesterday at Oahe Speedway north of Pierre. Other winners yesterday in the 6th points race were Paul Berger of Huron in the Pro Series. Chris Boom of Pierre won the Bike Race. Jay Tjerrdsma of Springfield took the Sportsman Class while Diane Soper of Gettysburg won the Street Trophy Division. James Morris of Pierre captured the High School division while the Junior Division winner was Carly Ellingson of Rapid City. Jonathan Huse of Onida took the Oahe Speedway Junior Minor race Jonathan Guether of Ft. Pierre was the winner of the Junior Gamblers Race. On Saturday, Terry Henrikson of Rapid City was the Box Shootout winner while James Morris of Pierre was the No Box Shootout winner. Jay Tjeerdsma of Springfield won the Trophy Shootout and Jonathan Guether of Ft. Pierre won the Junior Shootout.
Dustin Christopherson and Adam Jost of Pierre won the Governors Cup Walleye fishing tournament over the weekend. A 17.90-pound catch yesterday gave them a 35.97-pound total, less than a pound better than runners-up Bob Stalley and Nick Fosness, also of Pierre, who were first after the opening day. Christopherson and Jost won $10,360 for their championship. Lee Pulse and Scott Handel of Chamberlain had the largest fish both days, with a 7.10-pounder on Saturday and an 8.08-pounder on Sunday as the duo finished 5th in the team standings.
