The Joe Kirley Memorial baseball tournament, hosted by the Pierre 13-14 Teener baseball team begins it's 3 day run at Hyde Stadium tomorrow. The Pierre squad will be joined by Aberdeen, Huron, the Rapid City Post 22 Cadets and Watertown in the round robin tournament. The tournament opens tomorrow afternoon with Watertown facing Huron at 3 p.m., followed by Watertown playing the Rapid City Cadets at 5:15 p.m. and then Aberdeen and Pierre at 7:30 pm. Saturday games start at noon with Huron vs. Rapid City, followed at 2:30 p.m. with Huron v. Aberdeen. Pierre faces the Rapid City Cadets in a 5 p.m. game, followed at 7:30 p.m. with Watertown taking on Pierre. The Sunday round starts at 10 a.m. with Aberdeen vs. Rapid City, followed at 12:30 by Huron taking on Watertown. Pierre plays the final game of the tournament at 3 p.m. against Huron. Standard tournament admission of $5 per adult daily will be charged. Post 8 passes don't apply to tournaments.
The Pierre White 15-16 Teener baseball team will be competing in a tournament in Webster this weekend. At 3 pm tomorow afternoon, the White squad will face the Watertown White Sox. Saturday night at 7 pm, the White team will take on their host from Webster in their first two games of the tournament. Depending on how the White team does will determine the start time for their game on Sunday.
The Pierre Governor basketball team will go to their last team camp of the summer tomorrow and Saturday as they travel to Aberdeen to compete in the Northern State team camp. It is the 4th camp the Governors have attended this summer and it is a camp that Governor head coach Terry Becker has taken his squad to every year he has been in Pierre since 2004. Coach Becker said that despite the fact that 5 or 6 players that play summer AAU basketball won't be there this weekend, some 23 kids expressed a desire to go to the Northern Camp.
Pierre Athletic Director Dan Whalen says that the Parent and Athlete meetings with coaches of the fall sports is scheduled for Monday, August 1st at Riggs High School. Parents and Athletes that plan to participate in Athletics at Riggs High School for the 2011-12 school year can come in and get their Required Athletic Paperwork completed for any sport for any season – fall, winter or spring. The Fall Sports Meetings (with the exception of Girls Tennis which will be held on Thursday Aug. 4th @ 7:00 pm at Riggs HS Cafeteria) will follow the general information session and paperwork explanation. Athletes will NOT be able to participate until all of the required paperwork is turned in. Parents may also go online at www.pierre.k12.sd.us and click on the “Governors Sports” link then click on the “Required Athletic Forms” link and complete the forms either online and email them or print them off and drop them off at the Riggs High School main office or athletic office. All required forms are also available at Riggs High School in both offices as well and can be picked up there between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm. And this year the school district is also making available a heart screening by Transmed Inc. at a cost of $60 per student athlete. Transmed will be conducting the heart screenings at Riggs High School on Monday August 1st starting at 8:00 am until finished and on Friday August 12th starting at 8:00 am until finished. Appointments are necessary and those may be made by calling Transmed at 605-520-6560. The first practices are scheduled for August 2nd for the Competitive Cheer and Dance teams. August 8th for the Governor Golf and Lady Governor Tennis team and August 15th for the Football and Volleyball teams. The football equipment checkout will be Sunday evening the 14th at 7 pm at Riggs High.
