Rod's Monday Take N Things

If you did not have a chance to watch of the South Dakota Public Broadcasting special, History of Girls Basketball in South Dakota, I would urge you to do it when it is shown again. You can order a DVD for $90, not sure if it is worth that, but it was indeed quite interesting. Some nice interviews with Becky Flynn of Wakonda and Becky Hammon, former Brookings studs Amy Mikkelson and Renae Salquist, Bob Winter, Harold Thune and others. Nice piece on the Highmore girls and the Oahe Valley Conference back in the day. There could have been more but you can only get so much stuff into an hour and then of course a couple of 15 minute money raising segments. But a good program. I recorded it.

Nice resolve by the Capitals Hockey team to bounce back and beat Watertown 3-1 in the thrid place game of the state hockey tournament. First time in 4 years that Pierre has beaten Watertown in the final game of the tournament in what ever place game there were playing. After losing in overtime in the semis on Saturday it would have been easy to just go through the motions, but not this team. It showed a little pride, especially by the seniors on the squad. And what about Rushmore. The have only had hockey for around 10 years and already a state championship in both the boys varsity and JV state tournaments.

I was dissapointed that Pacific and Sam Willard did not get an NIT bid. So they play in the CIT (College Insiders Dot Com Tournament)for a second year. Pacific plasy at Loyola Marymount on Wednesday. South Dakota and White River's Louie Krogman are also playing in the tournament. They open at Creighton tomorrow night. And of course tonight is the NCAA Women's tournament selection. SDSU and Pierre freshman Steph Paluch and Katie Lingle await to see who they play and where they go. The ESPN Bracketology dude after going about week with SDSU going to Notre Dame for their first round game changed that yesterday. Now he has SDSU going to the Tempe bracket and plays Texas A&M in the first round. That is a tough draw. A&M was very impressive Saturday in beating Nebraska in the Big 12 tournament and giving the Huskers their first loss of the season. A&M went on to win the Big 12 tournament yesterday.

Congrats to Highmore-Harrold and their third place finish at the State B girls tournament. And the boys go at it this weekend. Three area teams in the fields. Crow Creek in the A and Sully Buttes and White River in the B. I Don't expect any of the 3 to bring home the championship trophy this year.

And, Pierre had two girls named to the All ESD girls basketball team this year. Paige Burkett was named to the All Conference squad and Amber Olson was named Honorable Mention. Not bad for Paige considering she sat out 3 weeks or so with an injury. Amber led the team in scoring at 11 points per game. Congratulations to both.

  1. You are such a positive force Rod....At least Crow Creek,White River and Sully Buttes MADE their respective tourneys. When half of the teams in your division make it (i.e. AA) you should be embarrassed when you dont.

  2. The $90.00 figure included membership in the Friends of Public Broadcasting. It is common for new releases like that to be exclusive to memberships for a certain time, then later made avaialable as a regular retail purchase from the SDPB store for a regular retail rate (around $20.00 or so).

  3. As I have mentioned on earlier post, It is my belief that making the state tournament is still tougher in the AA even though just under 1/2 of the teams in the Classification make the tournament. There are 17 AA teams and 8 spots in the tournament. Just a technicality but, when you have to play teams like Aberdeen and Huron and Mitchell 2 and 3 times a year, just to get out of the district, it is so dog gone hard. Everybody knows everybody inside and out. It's more like a heavyweight fight rather than a 100 or 200 meter dash. I would love to see the AA class be twice the size it is but South Dakota probably isn't going to grow that big in my lifetime (which at my age is getting shorter every day). I would love to see the AA go to a final four instead of 8 but those that make the decisions don't see it that way. And I might have been a bit out of line on the 90 dollars. Yes that does get you a membership in the Friends of Public Broadcasting. And maybe in the long run it would a good thing if more of us joined, then they can continue to come up with programs like the girls basketball and the football one they had in the fall. I don't mind opera singers but I probably wouldn't sit there in my living room and watch and listen to it. But that is just me. Please give if you want to. I know Bob Winter and Lynn Frederick did last night.
