Rod's Tuesday Take N Things

Is there anything more fun than March Madness and district tournament basketball. Unfortunatly you play a bad game and you season is done. I really feel that after 30 years of watching South Dakota high school basketball, it is tougher in the big school ranks to win. Why? Because everybody knows what everybody is doing. You play teams twice in the regular season. Face it, coaches cannot change things up that much so it comes down to a game of execution. If you do, you probably win. You don't you don't. And there are no weak teams in AA. OK you say, Pierre is 2 and 18! Ok, ask Huron coach Tim Buddenhagen about Pierre being weak. The conversation will be a short one. It's tough to beat a team 3 times is the old saying. I have been around the block a time or two. Over the year's teams have beaten teams 3 times. That is why tonight's game is really a toss up. Pierre should have could have would have won both games against Huron this season. They didn't. A lady asked me Saturday morning at the Legion baseball pancake breakfast, "Whats wrong with our team"? I said we are young but that doesn't hold water anymore because our freshman and sophmores and junors who didn't play alot in the past, have a year of expeirence under their belt now. I then said to her, we just make dumb mistakes at the most inopportune time. Then I thought, no, they don't make dumb decisions or mistakes. The mistakes are usually made because our guys are trying to make plays. If can make plays tonight, they will do ok for themselves.

By the way, speaking of pancakes and legion baseball, they are beginning indoor workouts today out at the PILc facility. The way the winter has gone, who isn't ready for a little baseball. I really hope the Govs make the state tournament because my wife and oldest son are going to Florida in two weeks to watch my youngest play for Minnesota State Moorhead and their annual week in Flordia where they will play 6 or 8 games over the 5 days. If we don't make the state tournament, I am stuck in town with nothing to do. I'd rather be telling people at the state tournament about our "Young Govs" and what we think we have going for us over the course of the next few years. That also includes our "Young Lady Govs". By the way don't forget their game at Mitchell against the Kernels is Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Corn Palace. Elimination of the season is on the line. By the way, it is Kernels, not Kernals. Geoff Gross, the Mitchell Athletic Director, has me straightned out on that. And by the way, there is no such thing as a "Lady Kernel". Just thought you might want to know.

  1. So if they're not "Lady Kernels," are they the Kernelettes? The Kernelesses? The Kernelitas? I always wondered why Mitchell thought "Kernels" was a good nickname. How many teams have a nickname that is actually something you can eat? Well, I guess there are the Yankton Bucks, the Hot Springs Bison, the Philip Scotties (wait, strike that last one), but none of these are vegetables, at least. Oh well, good luck to the Govs and Lady Govs against the COLONELS!!
