Friday's Sports Blog

The Pierre Governor football team has their home opener tonight as they host Aberdeen Central at Phil Trautner Stadium at Hollister Field. Both teams lost their season openers last week. Pierre was beaten 40-23 by Yankton while the Golden Eagles were upended 42-0 by Sioux Falls Roosevelt. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

The nine man era of high school football takes the field tonight in Ft. Pierre. The Stanley County Buffalos will play their first 9 man football game in over 20 years when they meet Miller in the season opener for both squads. Tonight will also be Miller's first 9 man game since playing 11 man football since at least the 1920's. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm at Ole Williamson Field in Ft. Pierre. Other games around the area tonight have Sully Buttes traveling to Highmore to face Highmore-Harrold. Both teams won their season openers last weekend. Jones County, coming off a season opening win travels to Philip to take on the Scotties in their season and home opener. Lyman is at home tonight as they face White River and Gettysburg opens their season at home as the Battlers host Faulkton.

The Pierre Lady Governor volleyball team dropped their third game of the season last night when they were swept by Huron 25-12, 25-21, 25-21 at Riggs High Gym. After a lackluster first game that saw Huron run off 9 unanswered points mainly on Lady Gov mistakes, the second and third games were much better but Huron always had an answer for a Lady Gov run. Kaitlin Allerdings led Huron with 13 kills while Crystal Merriam and Eliza Smith combined for 29 assists and Alix Katz had 10 digs to lead Huron. Kaitlin Severyn, playing for the first time since sitting out two games with an ankle injury, led the Lady Govs with 8 kills. Taylor Hyde had a game high 15 digs and Ashley Polak had 2 Service Aces. The Lady Govs are 1 and 3 on the season and 0 and 3 in ESD play. They are off until a week from tomorrow night when they host Brookings.

The Stanley County Lady Buffalo volleyball team is 0 and 3 on the season following a 3 game setback to Gregory last night at Parkview Gym in Ft. Pierre. Gregory won the match by scores of 25-7, 25-11, 25-9. Inconsistent serving all match long hampered the Lady Buffs who was led by Hailey Norman who had 8 kills. Shelby Geinger had 14 digs for Stanley County returns to the floor Tuesday when they host White River and Timber Lake in a triangular.


Coleman Cadwell and Lane Shroyer led a 1-2 Chamberlain finish at the Chamberlain Invitational boys golf tournament yesterday at Chamberlian. Cadwell fired a 72 and Shroyer came in with a 73. Winner won the team title with a 338 score, 1 stroke better than Chamberlain. Mobridge-Pollock was third with a 352. Pierre had two JV teams play in the tournament and they finished 4th and 5th in the 7 team field.

The Pierre Lady Governor Competitive Cheer and Competitive Dance teams' will open their season tomorrow in Pierre. The Pierre Spirit Invitational will begin at 12 noon at Riggs High Gym. Both squads have been working on their routines for a month for this weekends season opening competition. Watertown, Brandon Valley, Sturgis and Huron are among the teams expected to compete.

The Pierre Area Coaches Association has named their first Riggs High Athlete of the Week award winner. She is sophomore volleyball player Kaitlin Severyn. Kaitlyn had 15 kills against Yankton after spraining her ankle in warm ups and playing through the match with it. She was nominated by head coach Kacy Kienholz who said that Kaitlyn came into fall camp very strong and has been chosen by her team as a captain and a very good leader on the court. Her sprained ankle did not allow her to play Saturday against Douglas or Tuesday against Aberdeen Central.
