High School Football takes center stage tonight around the state and the area. The Pierre Governor football team will look to bounce back from a 61-6 homecoming bashing they recieved at the hands of the Mitchell Kernals last week when they travel to Sioux Falls to face 5th ranked Sioux Falls Washington. Governor head football coach Joe Kramer has talked to his team all this week about picking themselves up and putting their best effort they can against the 2 time defending State Class 11AA Champions. Kickoff tonight in Sioux Falls is scheduled for 5 pm.

The Stanley County Buffalo football team renews a longtime rivalry tonight when they travel to Philip to take on the Scotties. Stanley County has not played Philip for nearly a decade. Philip is winless in it's first four games but improving with each game. Stanley County is 1 and 3 but Philip head coach Kevin Morehart says the Buffalos may be the best 1 and 3 team in this area. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm central time in Philip.

Aubrey Wald of the Pierre Lady Governor tennis team won the 6th flight singles title yesterday for the Lady Governors highest finish at the ESD Conference tennis tournament in Brandon. Wald defeated Erica Hanson of Aberdeen Central 10-4 in the title match. Kate Wollman had a fourth place finish in number 2 singles and Eileen Leong finished 6th in the number 1 singles for the Lady Govs next highest finishes. Wald and Emily Dix had a third place finish in the number 3 doubles flight for the Lady Govs lone place winner in doubles. The Lady Govs scored 136 points to finish 5th in the team standings. Aberdeen Central won the ESD title scoring 292 points, 13 points better than runner up Watertown. Next up for the Lady Govs tennis team is the state tournament that begins Thursday in Sioux Falls.

The Pierre Lady Governors scored 76 points and the Governor boys had 83 as both squads place third in the Watertown Invitational Cross Country meet run yesterday. Aberdeen Central scored 35 points to win the girls division and Sioux Falls Washington had 44 t capture the boys crown. The Lady Govs got a 2nd place finish from Rachel Propst with a time of 15:19.0, 14 seconds behind champion Hannah Kastigar of Aberdeen Central. Aspen Iverson finished 9th with a time of 15:52 and Allison Mientsma placed 13th in a time of 16:04. For the Governor boys, Tyler Propst had the best finish in 9th place in a time of 17:10 and Steve Gordon placed 14th in a time of 17:29. Alex Waddell of Sioux Falls Washington won the individual title.

The Pierre Governor and Lady Governor Cross Country squads will compete in the Nike Heartland Regional Cross Country meet tomorrow in Sioux Falls. The varsity only meet will be run on the same course that the State High School Cross Country meet will be run on in several weeks. Head Coach Keith Christensen says that 5 or 6 other teams will compete in tomorrow's meet along with the Govs and Lady Govs.

After playing a pair of strong opponents in Sioux Falls Washington, Mitchell and Watertown in their last 3 matches, the Pierre Lady Governor volleyball team looks to pick up their first ESD Conference win of the season tomorrow when they travel to Brandon to face Brandon Valley. The Lady Govs are 3 and 8 on the season but winless in the ESD Conference so far. Brandon Valley brings a 1-9 record and one ESD Conference win into tomorrow's match. The day begins at 12 noon with JV and Freshman games while the varsity contest is scheduled for a 2:30 pm start.

The Stanley County Lady Buffalo volleyball team travels to Redfield tomorrow to compete in the Redfield tournament. The Lady Buffalos are 1 and 11 on the season as they face Eureka-Bowdle and Miller in pool play. Depending on how Stanley County does they would play a third match in a tournament setting.

Pierre native Curry Kuehl, a sophomore golfer for the Northern State Wolves was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Golfer of the Week Award. Kuehl was the top NSIC finisher at the NSIC/RMAC Crossover meet, finishing in a three-way tie for fifth. His three-round score of 217 was just five strokes back of the medalist Jim Knous of Colorado Mines. Kuehl carded rounds of 74, 71 and 72 to finish 1-over on the par-72 Wild Horse Golf Course.

The high school state soccer playoffs begin this weekend. The Pierre Lady Governors are the 4th seed after the regular and they will host Brandon Valley in a match later this afternoon at 4 pm at the Hilgers Gulch Soccer Fields. The Governors are the 12th seed and will travel to Sioux Falls to face O'Gorman tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. The State High School Soccer tournament is scheduled for next Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Mitchell.

The Pierre Post 8 American Legion Baseball organization will be holding a Rummage & Bake Sale Fund Raiser on Saturday, October 8th from 8:00am to 4:00pm at 339 South Pierre Street in the empty Coast to Coast/Ace Hardware building in downtown Pierre.. Many families have donated an enormous selection of appliances, clothing of All gender and size, coats, large selection of furniture, televisions, Post 8 shirts and baseball equipment, golf clubs, bikes, movies, upright freezer, and lots of baked goodies with more items and donations coming in daily! All proceeds from the sale will go to the Post 8 Baseball organization. The public's support is Greatly Appreciated and the teams hope to see you at the sale!
