Rod's Tuesday Sports Thoughts

On Friday I posted girls basketball camp information for the Pierre Lady Governors this summer. I unfortunatly missed the elementary camp for girls who will be heading into grades 2 through 5 next year. The camp fee is $40 of which girls will recieve a pair of shorts. The camp dates are June 20th thru the 23rd and time of the camp is from 10:30 am to noon all 3 days. For information on the other camps for Junior High and High School refer back to Friday's blog. Also there will be a girls basketball summer league at Riggs High Gym on Thursday night's this summer from 6 to 10 pm consisting of teams from area high schools. Stanley County, Sully Buttes, Gettysburg, Miller, Highmore-Harrold and Philip will be joining Pierre.

Next. The Pierre Governor Tennis team will play in the ESD Conference Tennis Tournament on Friday in Aberdeen and this year, Pierre is probably the favorite to win the title. Pierre has not won an ESD title in 20 years. 1991 was the last ESD Conference champion. Coach Jeff Schlekeway says that along with Pierre.........
Watertown, Aberdeen Central and Mitchell should challenge for the title. The seeding meeting is Friday morning at 7:45 am with the tournament beginning at 9 am. And with the way the weather has been this spring, the seeding meeting may be as interesting of an event as the tournament itself. Pierre should have high seeds in at least the number 1 through 4 singles spots and possibly at number 6. The doubles teams at the 1 and 2 flights should seed out high on Friday as well. The most points in a tournament are gained at the top at number 1 and 2 singles and 1 and 2 doubles and Pierre has been strong in both positions so far this year. So perhaps this will be the year that Pierre breaks through. Pierre finished 2nd in 2000 and 2001 but that is the highest they have been able to get in the ESD tournament as Watertown has pretty much dominated the conference over the course of the last 10 years. Last year, the Governors were a 4th place finisher, the highest finish since Jeff Schlekeway took over the reigns of head coach in 2005. So the best of luck to the Governor tennis squad on Friday.

And speaking of tennis, a Lil' Lady Govs Tennis Camp is being held for Girls in grades 1-8 on Monday, May 23 from 6-8 pm and Tuesday, May 24 from 3:30-5:30. Join the Girls Varsity Tennis team for 2 nights of fun while learning about the basics of tennis plus get a FREE t-shirt! Racquets will be provided but if you have one please bring it. Call Megan Vockrodt at 295-1503 or 224-6776 with questions or to register by May 18th.
