Rod's Wednesday Sports N Things

The Pierre Rattlers amateur baseball team will open their season with their traditional double header at Four Corners a week from Saturday. Team general manager Tom Magedanz released the final Rattlers schedule yesterday. It includes playing in the Brookings tournament June 4th and 5th and the home opener on Wednesday, June 8th against Winner. The Regional tournament at a still be named location will be held July 29th through the 31st with the first weekend of the State Class A amateur tournament being hosted by the Rattlers at Hyde Stadium August 5th through the 7th. The Pierre Area Coaches Association awarded the Silver P award to 6 athletes for the 2010-2011 athletic year.  This award is given to Riggs HS athletes who earn varsity letters in 3 Pierre Public School sponsored sports in one athletic year.  These athletes are commended for their hard work and dedication to Governor & Lady Governor athletics.

·         Kaitlyn Severyn (VB, GBB, Track)

The PACA Senior Career Athlete Award and Scholarship was also awarded.  Athletes are nominated by head coaches and voted on by all coaches in the district.  This award and scholarship recognizes the accomplishments of a senior male and a senior female athlete during their years of wearing a Governor or Lady Governor uniform. 

MALE Athlete: Parker McKittrick
2010 110 m hurdle champ (gold medal winner) at state track meet; part of 2009 gold medal and state champion Medley Relay; shares state record in the 110 m high hurdles; Part of 2008 State and ESD championship track and field team, 2009 ESD champion team; All- Conference in football in 2010; Most Valuable track athlete in 2010.

FEMALE Athlete: Amber Olson
Lettered in GBB 4 yrs; All-conference honorable mention - 2 yrs; Team MVP - 2011;
South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association Academic All State - award only given to seniors - 3.5 GPA or better. Amber has a 4.0 GPA. Amber also was a letter winner in Volleyball multiple times.


The Pierre Governor football camp for boys entering the 8th through 12th grades next year has been scheduled for July 12th through the 14th. The camp director is Pierre Governor head football coach Joe Kramer. Equipment checkout at the equipment shed at Riggs High School will be on Monday evening July 11th with seniors at 7 pm. Juniors at 7:10 pm. Sophomores at 7:20 pm. Freshman at 7:40 pm and 8th graders at 7:50 pm. There is a $50 partipant fee per player with the camp to be held at the Upper Practice Field at Riggs High School all 3 days. Intersted partipants can register for the camp at the Oahe Family YMCA.

The Pierre Governor boys basketball camp will be held May 31st through June 3rd at Riggs High Gym under the direction of Pierre Governor head boys basketball coach Terry Becker and members of the Governor coaching staff as well as players of the Governor varsity squad. The elementary camp for ages 7 through 12 will be run from 9 am to 11:30 am all 4 days. The Middle School camp will run from 1 to 3:30 pm and the high school camp will be run from 5 to 8 pm for that 4 day camp. There is a $50 partipant fee for all 3 camps. There has been a change in the starting time for the Region 6A boys and girls track and field meet scheduled to be held Thursday in Miller. Meet director Charlie Sizer says the field events are scheduled to begin at 10 am with the running events now scheduled to begin at 11:15 am. Stanley County is one of the teams competing in that track and field meet tomorrow.


Sioux Falls O'Gorman holds down the number 1 rating in South Dakota high school tennis heading into the state tournament that begins tomorrow in Sioux Falls. O'Gorman, undefeated in duals and the GDC Confernce tournament champion has held the number 1 ranking all season long. The Pierre Governors are rated 4th following an 11-1 season in dual matches and a 3rd place finish in the ESD Conference tournament. Sioux Falls Washington is second with Rapid City Stevens 3rd ahead of the Governors. Sioux Falls Lincoln is rated 5th. The number 1 doubles team for the Governors of Conner Forney and Hans Leong are rated 5th in the indidivudal ratings.

Parkston and Mobridge-Pollock qualified yesterday for the Class A team portion of the State Class A girls golf tournament next week. Parkston won the Region 5A girls golf tournament played at Hillsview Golf Course with a 349 team score far outdistancing runner up Mobridge-Pollock's 395. Chamberlain scored a 424 for third place. Stanley County finished 7th with a 498 team score. Talia Peters of Wagner was individual medalist with a 39-39-78. Madison Hand of Stanley County finished 15th and teammate Amanda Lounsberry was 19th in the final standings to both qualify individually for the state tournament next week.
