Rod's Friday Sports Morning Blog

Kaitlyn Severyn, who will be a sophomore next season for the Pierre Lady Governor basketball team gave a verbal commitment Thursday to play her collegiate basketball at South Dakota State. The 5'10" Severyn - whose dad, Shane, played football for the Jackrabbits - has played two years of varsity basketball, earning all-ESD honors last year as a freshman.

One day after surrendering 21 runs in a doubleheader loss to Mitchell and Yankton, the Pierre Post 8 American Legion Baseball team got stellar pitching in a doubleheader sweep of Spearfish at Hyde Stadium. Pierre won the doubledip by 11-0 and 6-2 scores. In the opener which ended after 5 innings on the 10 run mercy rule, Nolan Merrill fired a 4 hit shutout and get plenty of run support as they crossed the plate in each of the 4 innings they hit. Adam Deneke led the offense with 3 hits and 4 RBI's in the opener. In the nightcap, Jordan Smith went the distance scattering 4 hits and 2 runs, both in the 7th inning after Pierre had built a 6-0 lead. Merrill had 2 hits and walked twice to lead Pierre offensivly. With the wins, Pierre pulled themselve above the .500 mark once again as they are 19-17 on the season.

The Pierre Post 8 American Legion Baseball team has something it has not had in a week today. A day off. After playing 11 games in 7 days, the Post 8 squad does not have a game scheduled for today or tonight. But the day off will be short lived as Post 8 returns to the field tomorrow. Pierre will entertain Brookings in a doubleheader at Hyde Stadium. Brookings beat Pierre in their only other meeting of the season last month in the championship game of the Yankton tournament. First pitch for game 1 is scheduled for 2 pm. Tomorrow's doubleheader will be sponsored by the American State Bank of Pierre. Several drawings will be held throughout the games for prizes from American State Bank.

The Pierre Split Squad baseball team returns to the field tonight as they travel to Spearfish to face the Spearfish JV's. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm central time. The 15-16 White Teener squad is also in action tonight when they travel to Aberdeen for a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm. Again, the first game of the doubleheader will count towards the league standings. The White squad split a doubleheader with Aberdeen their last games on Tuesday night in Pierre. The 13-14 Teener baseball team is also in action tonight as they travel to Spearfish for a 6:30 pm doubleheader.

Still stinging from their 10 inning 13-5 loss to Four Corners on Wednesday night, the Pierre Rattlers amatuer baseball team returns to the field tonight when they host Chamberlain in another non-league game at Hyde Stadium. Pierre brings a 3 and 7record into the game that is scheduled for an 8 pm first pitch.
