The Class A State Baseball Tournament kicked off this afternoon in Yankton, S.D. The top teams from across the state descended upon Riverside Ballpark to compete for the right to be called South Dakota's best. In early game action, Sioux Falls East defeated Pierre 14-4 and Brookings topped Garretson 8-2. At night, Watertown rallied to top Sioux Falls West 10-6 and Rapid City Post 22 knocked off Yankton 11-1. Today's games have Pierre facing Sioux Falls West at 10 am and Garretson taking on Yankton at 12:30 pm in elimination games of the double elimination tournament. Tonight in the winners bracket, Watertown takes on Sioux Falls East and Rapid City Post 22 faces Brookings.

The Pierre White 15-16 Teener baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Watertown Red Sox last night at Hyde Stadium. Watertown won the first game 14-10 to gain a league victory. Watertown then swept the doubleheader with a 4-3 win in 6 innings in the nightcap. Watertown scored 2 runs in the fifth and the go ahead run in the 6th in the 2nd game leaving reliever Shay Reinke with the loss. He was the third Pierre pitcher used in the contest. Alex Meagher had 2 of Pierre's 6 hits. In the opener, Watertown outhit Pierre 11-6 as they scored 8 runs in the 2nd inning. Pierre had a 5 run 4th inning to cut the lead to 10-8 but would get no closer. Ben Liedholt and Bo Atkins each had 2 of Pierre's 6 hits. Atkins allowed 13 runs on 10 hits to take the loss on the mound.

The final All Star game of the week is tonight in Aberdeen. The high school all star football game will be played at Swisher Field with a 6 pm kickoff. Pierre's Terelle Walker is one of the athletes who will be competing on the North Squad. Terry Keller, Todd Palmer and Louis Young of Pierre will be 3 of the 5 officials working the game tonight.

51 members of the Pierre Swim Team have qualfied for the State Long Course Championship Meet to be held in Sioux Falls this Friday through Sunday. Swim team members recently competed in 3 meets in Sioux Falls, Brookings and the B/C Long Course State Championships in Mitchell. In the meet in Brookings, Talia Jorgenson won 6 of the 8 events she swam in, in the girls 9-10 age division for the best performance by a Pierre swimmer in that meet. In Sioux Falls, Wyatt Rumrill had 3 first place finishes in 10 events he competed in, in the Boys 13-14 division for Pierre's top performance at that meet. In the B/C State meet at Mitchell, Kaitlynn Axtell had the best peformance from Pierre swimmers finishing first in 3 of the 6 events she competed in, in the girls 8 and under age division.
