The first round of the Class A Men's Amatuer State Baseball tournament is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, August 5th through the 7th at Hyde Stadium in Pierre. There will be two games on Friday night at 5 pm and 7:30 pm. 4 games will be played on Saturday at 11:00 am, 1:30 pm, 5:00 pm and 7:30 pm and 2 games on Sunday at 11:00 am and 1:30 pm. 6 teams out of 8 will advance to the second and final weekend of the State "A" Amateur Tournament in Mitchell the following weekend. Amatuer baseball teams move into Region Tournament play this weekend to qualify for the State "A" Tournament. The Pierre Rattlers Region tournament is Saturday and Sunday in Brookings with Brookings, Castlewood, Huron and Pierre making up the district tournament field. Two teams will qualify for the first weekend of the State tournament in Pierre.

Pierre youth golfer Zach Smalley fired an 81 yesterday during the first day of the South Dakota Golf Association Junior Championship tournament being golfed at the Brandon Country Club Golf Course. Smalley, golfing in the Boys 16-18 division is 6 shots behind the first round leaders going into today's second and final round. In the girls 16-18 age division tournament, Hallie Getz of Pierre fired an 85 and is 9 shots behind the leader going into today's second round. In the boys 12-13 age divison tournament which golfed only one round of 18 holes yesterday, Cody Kuehl of Pierre fired an 87 to finish in 8th place in the tournament. Kade McTighe of Ft. Pierre fired a 9 hole score of 48 to finish 6th in the boys 11 and under division. No girls from Pierre golfed in either the 11 and under or 12-13 age division tournament.

Several central South Dakota players and Pierre Lady Governor head girls basketball coach Lisa Kannegeiter-Bahe will be competing tonight in the girls All Star basketball game during the 25th annual South Dakota High School All Star games in Aberdeen. The north squad has Baily Kusser of Highmore-Harrold on it. She is joined by Erin Rabenberg of Mobridge-Pollock, Kelsey Hunter of Miller and Roni Moore of Cheyenne Eagle Butte. Sharee Galbraith of Winner is on the South Roster.

A 12 year old athlete from Pierre has qualifed for the Hershey National Track and Field North American GAmes Final next month in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Bradley Dean qualified in the 200 meter dash. Dean won the 200 meter dash at the State Hershey Track and Field meet held in Pierre last month. Dean will be one of 400 athletes who qualified for the Hershey North American Finals meet which will be held August 6th in Hershey, Penn.
