Rod's Tuesday Morning Sports Blog

The Pierre Post 8 American Legion baseball team begins it's last week of the regular season tonight when they travel to Spearfish in a match-up of inter-region foes. Pierre takes a 4 game winning streak into the contest against a team they swept a doubleheader from nearly two weeks ago in Pierre. It also will be a sneak peak of an opening round game in next week's Region 3A tournament as Pierre plays Spearfish in their first game of that double elimination tournament. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 6:30 pm central time in Spearfish.

The Pierre 15-16 Green Teener baseball team is back in action tonight as the Green's travel to Watertown for a doubleheader scheduled for a 5:30 pm first pitch. The first game of the doubleheader will count in the league standings. Tomorrow, the Green's will travel to Webster for a doubleheader.

The first of 3 days of the Pierre Governor football camp begins this afternoon on the Upper Practice field at Riggs High School. The camp, under the direction of Pierre Governor head football coach Joe Kramer and his Governor football coaching staff is the only camp the Governor football team is taking part in this summer. The camp is for 8th through 12th grade players this coming school year and any player who did not register at the Oahe YMCA but would like to take part in the camp should come to the camp before 4 pm and they will be able to take part in it. Camp hours are 4 to 8 pm all 3 days. It will also be a chance for the players to meet new Governor assistant head coach Jason Poppinga. Poppinga, whose brother Shannon who is the defensive coordinator of the Governors, will be working with coach Kramer on the offense this year.

The Pierre Governor and Lady Governor athletic programs will have a full time athletic trainer beginning this season. Last night at the Pierre School Board meeting, the Board and Avera Medical entered into a 3 year agreement that will see Avera provide a full time trainer to the school. Pierre Athletic Director Dan Whalen says that it did not take long for the two sides to reach an agreement. Avera is the process of hiring a person who will be on board as of August 1st. The new trainer will be there for all high school students, freshman through senior. With the hiring, Pierre becomes one of the final, if not the last, ESD school to have a full time athletic trainer on staff.

Sideline Cheering Tryouts for the Pierre Riggs High School Football team for the coming season will be held on July 19th in Pierre.
